Genealogy of the Angelo family
Angelus, Paulus [Paolo Angelo, Archbishop of Durazzo / Dürres] (1416-1469)
Dated November 1460, this genealogy of the Angeli places both the Albanian warlord Kastrioti-Skanderbeg and his close collaborator Paulus Angelus, (Latin) Archbishop of Dürres, in the line of the Byzantine emperors. Signalled by N. Iorga (1915), the 16th century Florentine manuscript also contains several unpublished documents pertaining to Paulus Angelus and his family: a letter from November 1462 on the decisions of a local synod held in Matja (including a famous baptismal formula in Albanian – “unte paghesont premenit atit et birit et spertit semt”); a consistent excerpt from a codex held in the Dürres archives (Ex aureo antiquitatum libro archivii Civitatis Durachiensis); and a (fake) 1293 chrysobul granted by Michael IX Palaiologos to Michaele & Andrea Angelo.
