Description
Cartulary of the St. Nicholas Monastery near Bucharest, foundation of prince Michael the Brave and main dependency (metoh) of Simonopetra Monastery on Mount Athos. Held in Simonopetra's archive, the cartulary dates from 1775, when Costandin dascăl translated the surviving documents concerning the possessions of the Monastery (slaves, wineyards, pieces of land etc.) from Slavonic and copied them from the Romanian originals. Except for a 1587 document issued by the Moldavian prince Peter the Lame (Petru Șchiopul), all the items were issued in Wallachia. The oldest was issued in August 23, 1437 by the Wallachian prince Alexander (Alexandru) Aldea. As it stands now, the cartulary comprises 399 documents, the last one dates from 1848.
