Description
17th century Romanian translation of Herodotus’ Histories. It was attributed to the Moldavian logothete Eustratie (first half of the 17th century), to the Metropolitan of Moldavia Dosoftei († 1693), and to Nicolae Spătarul “Milescu”. The last one has gathered momentum. The translation has survived in a 1816 manuscript copy of a 1746 manuscript copy. N. Iorga found this precious codex in the library of Coșula Monastery; soon afterwards, he edited the text, placing its genesis in 1645. Liviu Onu and Lucia Șapcaliu argue that Nicolae Spătarul translated the text while he was in Istanbul, between 1668-1670, and that the original manuscript, now lost, was kept for a while in the Princely library of Iași.
