Now held in the Library of the University of Ioannina, this manuscript belonged to the Collection of Eulogios Kourilas (1880-1961), Orthodox metropolitan bishop of Korçë (Korutsas) in Albania between 1937 and 1939. Ms. Kourilas 5 contains 41 texts dealing with the history of the Ottoman Empire; many of them are yet to be published. The manuscript was writen by the 18th century scholar and bibliophile Nikolaos Karatzas. It starts with texts presenting the raise of the Turks and it ends with the 1774 treaty of Küçük Kaynarca signed between the Russian Empire and the Ottoman Empire. One may find a chapter from the chronicle of Pseudo-Sfrantzes (no 8); a fragment from the chronicle of Manouil Malaxos (no 9); a text on the Albanian hero Scanderbeg (no 10); an account of the siege of Vienna by the Turks in 1683, translated from Italian into Modern Greek by Ieremias Kakavelas (no 12); the History of Dimitrios Ramadanis (no 19); the Greek translation of the sefâretnâme of Yirmisekiz Mehmed Çelebi Efendi, Ottoman ambassador to Louis XV (no 23); and lists of the Sultans, of the Grand Viziers, and of the Princes of Moldavia and Wallachia (nos 38-40). Ms. Kourilas 5 was thoroughy described by Machi Païzi-Apostolopoulou, in 2011.
