Description
140 x 65 cm map of Wallachia printed in Greek in Padua, in 1700. Held in the British Library [Maps.*44170 (1)], the Πίναξ γεωγραφικὸς τῆς ὑψηλoτάτης ἡγεμονίας Οὐγγροβλαχίας εἰς Δεκαεπτὰ θέματα διηρημένης / Index Geographicus Celsissimi Principatus Wallachiae in decem et septem Themata divisae was published by Archmandrite Chrysanthos Notaras, a future Patriarch of Jerusalem († 1731). According to the legend on the map, it was made by the “doctor-philosopher” Ioannis Komninos, based on informations provided by the stolnic Constantin Cantacuzino. Generally regarded as the “first” map of Wallachia – that is, the first map of Wallachia illustrating a “Wallachian” point of view –, the “Index” was dedicated by Chrysanthos to Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu († 1714). Vienna – Österreichische Nationalbibliothek – Kartensammlung und Globenmuseum (ÖNB/KAR) AB 6 (5). Splendid 168 x 76 cm hand-coloured copy made in Vienna, in 1707. Dedicated to the Emperor Joseph I (“Augustissimo Invictissimoque Romanorum Imperatori Iosepho I. Mappam hanc geographicam Principatus Valachiae in XVII themata divisae ab exemplari graeco, quod, juxta accuratissimam descriptionem Sapientiss(imi) Viri Constantini Cantacuzeni, et Excellentiss(imi) Medici ac Philosophi Ioannis Comneni novissime edidit ac Celsissimo Principi Valachiae D(omi)no Ioanni Constantino Bassarabae Woewondae dedicavit Chrysanthus Presbyter, Apostolici ac Sanctissimi Hierosolymarum Patriarchalis Throni Archimandrita, Desumptam, ac in formam politiorem redactam et Latinitate Danatam Obsequiosissime Dat, Dicat Consecrat Schierendorf”), this version departs in several points from the 1700 printing.
